Alaska Shellfish Farms

Location: Halibut Cove, AK. Winter population: 15. This remote island is where Greg and Weatherly Bates chose to plant their family’s roots. Here these farmers of the sea harvest oysters, mussels and kelp. Mari-culture farming is hard work anywhere, but especially grueling in Alaska’s unforgiveable waters and wild tides, tough weather, and isolation from the rest of the world. For the Bates family, they are so confident in this life they have built.
